Better Communication Alternative

Communicate Better by Pretending People You Know Are Strangers

Approaching your communication with others as if you were talking to a stranger might actually improve better your communication. As according to Dr. Samantha Smithstein, suggests that the key to better communication is pretending your spouse is a stranger and this is well applicable to all sort of communications.

We have a tendency to let familiarity alter our communication because we have expectations of what the other person is going to say. Or sometimes, we may run out of topics/questions due to the familiarity. But, simple questions as, "How's your class today?", "How's your work today" and etc could make a difference to some people or it could be good startup for communication.

Once you start to feel you know a person, you feel you can often predict their behavior. However, as noted, humans are terrible at predicting the future. So it stands to reason that when you try to predict what someone is going to say you are, at the same time, limiting the possibilities/expectations.

People started feeling lazy to ask simple questions or talk (because we know too well the person) that often important in a daily communication. Looking at people you know as strangers—whether they're your spouse, a friend, a colleague, relative and so on isn't something you want to follow literally, but approaching communication with the people in your life without assumption could make for more interesting and fruitful conversations.

The Reward of Faith

Faith is to BELIEVE what you do not SEE and the Reward of this Faith is to SEE what you Believe
~ Saint Augustine

How many of us have FAITH to do or challenge something that we may afraid of the negative consequence, failure??? Can you see the road shown on the picture below?? Do you know where it ends??

I wanna share my real experience here for the final project experience I've gone through during my college days. When it comes to deciding Computer Science Final Project Title for everyone, that was where the frustration came.

There are few category of people:

  • 1. People who dare to face the greatest risk of having failure but stand chance for bigger reward of success - It's not easy to get high marks, and high possibility of failing the project in the end. But at the same time, stand a chance to be rewarded very good marks once it's succeeded to impress judges.

  • 2. People who play safe - Propose any safe title that is acceptable with low risk of failure. In other words, it's not easy to get high marks but at least, it's not easy to fail too.

  • I'm the people who fall on first category listed. Once I had that risky project in mind, it took me 3 weeks + to have decided to proceed. The biggest risk that I was going to have that time was:

    1. Fail the project = fail the entire course = General Degree

If I were to play safe, I would at least get Second Upper Honours at least. But, once in lifetime, we shall be brave enough to challenge the impossible task. The reward would be more than just project marks. The experiences/knowledge/improvements I have learned was priceless and made me grow stronger than ever.

I had HARD TIME during that 8 months period of doing this project. The difficulty, obstacles and etc that had been trying to make me give up the project. But, with the faith in myself, I've never given up even one second. Yes, there were times I thought everything shattered into pieces when things didn't run smoothly. But, faith and self believe have been the keys that keep me who I am today with the success I've gained.

Eventually, I've achieved my First Class Honours with A grade Final Computer Science Project.

    CONCLUSION:

Back to the above question, do you know where the road ends??? Our life is like the road shown in the picture, an endless roads. We will face some obstacles, roads with holes, smooth road and many more. Who knows what lies behind that?

Sometimes, we have to have the guts to do one or more decisions to be different from others and to be rewarded the success that we have always wanted to. I could have chosen the second category, play safe. But lesser chance of getting First Class Honours. I've gone through all the TOUGH TIME but it worths every single second for achieving my First Class Honours.

What makes me different from many people??? I always have strong faith to myself with the self believe positive attitude. I always believe positive consequence more than negative and I do not afraid of failure because I learned a lot from failure.

I have FAITH (believe what I do not see) - First Class Honours with A Grade Computer Science Project
and I have Reward (see what I believe) - First Class Honours with A Grade Computer Science Project

Good Luck in pursuing your dreams to EVERYONE! :)
